Role Overview: The Safety Technician is responsible for the collection, segregation, and management of hazardous chemical wastes generated throughout a university and hospital setting, including clinics and research laboratories. Secondary responsibilities include the collection and management of hazardous pharmaceutical wastes, radiological wastes, universal wastes, and other related waste streams.

Primary Job Duties
- Collect, segregate, and manage hazardous chemical wastes generated throughout university and hospital facilities, including clinics and research laboratories.
- Collect and manage hazardous pharmaceutical, radiological, universal, and other applicable waste streams.
- Perform work in accordance with applicable Federal, State, and local regulations and standards, including OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC, and RCRA requirements.
- Communicate with the supervisor regarding policies and procedures used to assure regulatory compliance.
- Safely handle waste containers and materials, including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and manipulate 400 lb. drums.
- Work safely in environments ranging from standard office conditions to locations where immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) atmospheres may exist.
- Wear required respiratory protection and protective clothing and equipment when conditions require it.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to hazardous material management.
- Basic knowledge of chemistry and other related sciences.
- Understanding of basic chemical properties sufficient to successfully segregate various waste substances for shipping or treatment.
- Ability to utilize computer technology to access data, maintain records, and generate reports.
- Functional oral and written communication skills.
- Associate's degree in occupational safety, environmental health and safety, or a related field.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and manipulate 400 lb. drums.
- Must be physically able to wear respiratory protection.
- Work may occur in IDLH atmospheres requiring burdensome protective clothing and equipment.
- Where conditions are not extremely hazardous, work may still be uncomfortable or unpleasant, including exposure to high heat.
