General Description of the Job Class

Perform duties required to operate a PBX switchboard and communications equipment and alarms.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Answer incoming calls in a timely manner, answering all incoming calls. Answer questions of caller according to hospital policy and direct calls to the appropriate department. Overhead page authorized personnel over PA system in accordance with policy with regard to the time of day, whether or not the person is a physician, employee or guest. Maintain a beeper list and beeps personnel according to type of pager. Knowledge of the different panels and all alarms within the PBX and what they are for so that the appropriate policies can be followed to notify the appropriate personnel when an alarm triggers. Immediately notify Engineering and/or Safety/Security when alarms or equipment malfunctions or when unsafe conditions occur. Learn all departmental policies, especially correct procedures as they pertain to alarms and codes in emergency situations and know his/her role in implementing plan and the hospital call back-roster. Attend the hospital's employee orientation and spend time with the PBX Supervisor to become knowledgeable on departmental procedures.

Work Performed:

  • Respond, screen, and relay incoming and outgoing long distance, local and inter-communication calls through use of computerized communication systems in a 24/7 environment (working days, nights weekends, inclement weather situations and holidays) as essential service staff.
  • Receive, dispatch and document data to teams in emergencies and/or life threatening situations including, but not limited to, emergency (e.g. code blue, red, orange, etc.) and disaster codes.
  • Page personnel as requested using master listing; retrieve pages; receive and deliver messages. Provide information about organization to patients, students, staff, and the public reviewing sources as necessary including, but not limited to, on-call schedules, research programs/studies, physician rotation and referral, and non-confidential patient information.
  • Maintain and relay current listing of telephone and paging numbers incorporating changes and new assignments as they occur.
     

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:

High School graduate

Experience:

Prior knowledge of a communications system is preferred.
