Department Coordinator, Sr.

Job Overview

Provide outstanding customer service while coordinating and participating in the selling of merchandise; open and/or close store and maintain and secure cash deposits; record all sales in cash register; prepare nightly closing documentation and/or opening paperwork as applicable.  Assist in maintaining store inventory levels and keeping store looking neat and clean; clean shelves and displays; assist in receiving inventory from vendor trucks and transporting it into store stockroom.

Work Performed

  • Coordinate one or more complex departments or specialty areas within Stores in the absence of the Manager; coordinate day-to-day operations to ensure area is well stocked and creatively merchandised; ensure efficient customer service.
  • Evaluate market trends, analyze new merchandise to determine selling potential and commit university funds to order new stock based on evaluations; evaluate existing merchandise in other units and/or immediate unit and make decisions concerning appropriateness of stock and removal from sales floor. Assign work to and evaluate performance of lower level employees in designated unit or units.
  • Perform various routine clerical functions in the recording and reporting of information required for accurate and up-to-date departmental records; process incoming and outgoing forms and documents according to operating procedures; monitor and participate in inventories of merchandise.
  • Receive deliveries and process mail orders according to procedures; verify quantities and items against packing slips, invoices and purchase orders; ensure merchandise received is in good condition.
  • Determine appropriate discount for slow selling merchandise; monitor and participate in the pricing of new merchandise to ensure correct price and department code; evaluate and participate in the creative display of merchandise on sales floor.
  • Assist customers in the selection of products and recommend additional purchases; answer customer calls and inquiries and resolve customer complaints; monitor for shoplifting and take appropriate actions as needed in accordance with store policy.
  • Operate point-of-sale cash register as needed, processing cash and non-cash transactions.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires knowledge of basic grammar and mathematical principles to maintain proper inventory counts and to handle sales transactions, generally acquired through a high school education.

Experience:

Work generally requires one year of retail experience to acquire skills necessary to coordinate operations of a specialty area within University Stores and to gain the ability to interact effectively with vendors.
